Advancements in #Flash Technology

Image
Following #FLASHNEXT ,lets try to summarize the technological advancements made in Flash -                                          Hybrid Arrays : Storage systems with a variable percentage of flash, with automated data placement (hot data on flash and cold data on HDD) to provide a balance of (usually not the highest) performance and (often the lowest) price. These are best for users’ persistent and predictable data that does much of the basic daily work. All-flash Arrays :  Combines the power of flash and the capabilities of enterprise storage Server Flash as Local Storage : PCIe flash card (that uses MLC media)  deployed in the server as a local storage device for application acceleration. By storing data locally on the  server, improves the performance of application reads and writes by reducing latency and  accelerating throughp...

Big Data Revolution in Information Security

RSA today released a Security Brief asserting that  The dissolution of traditional defensive perimeters coupled with attackers’ abilities to circumvent traditional security systems requires organizations to adopt an intelligence driven security model that is more risk-aware, contextual, and agile. Intelligence-driven security relies on big data analytics. Big data encompasses both the breadth of sources and the information depth needed for programs to assess risks accurately and to defend against illicit activity and advanced cyber threats. Within the next two years, we predict big data analytics will disrupt the status quo in most information security product segments, including SIEM; network monitoring; user authentication and authorization; identity management; fraud detection; and governance, risk & compliance. In the next three to five years, we predict data analytics tools will further evolve to enable a range of advanced predictive capabilities and automat...

2012 Digital Universe Study

Image
The 6th edition of Digital Universe Study was released today. The EMC-sponsored study by IDC, measures and characterizes all the digital data created, replicated, and consumed worldwide in a single year. The 2012 report projects the growth of the Digital Universe through 2020.  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here are some of the key findings from the same -   New IDC Digital Universe study, “ Big Data, Bigger Digital Shadows, and Biggest Growth in the Far East ”¹ (sponsored by EMC) finds that only a tiny fraction of the world’s Big Data potential is being realized, though the amount of useful data is expanding.  IDC projects that the digital universe will reach 40 zettabytes (ZB) by 2020, an amount that exceeds previous forecasts by 5 ZBs, resulting in a 50-fold growth from the beginning of 2010. This year’s study marks the first time IDC was able to capture where the information in the digital un...

What is Big Data ?

Image
Big data  (also spelled Big Data) is a general term used to describe the voluminous amount of unstructured and semi-structured data a company creates -- data that would take too much time and cost too much money to load into a relational database for analysis. Although Big data doesn't refer to any specific quantity, the term is often used when speaking about petabytes and exabytes of data. To clarify matters, the three Vs of volume, velocity and variety are commonly used to characterize different aspects of big data. Big data is being enabled by inexpensive storage, a proliferation of sensor and data capture technology, increasing connections to information via the cloud and virtualized storage infrastructures, and innovative software and analysis tools. Big data is not a "thing" but instead a dynamic/activity that crosses many IT borders. IDC defines it this way:  Big data technologies describe a new generation of...

What is "The Human Face of Big Data" Project

Image
“ The Human Face of Big Data ,” the latest groundbreaking, globally crowdsourced initiative from Rick Smolan, the creator of the “Day in the Life” series. The project, made possible through primary sponsorship from EMC, is based on the premise that the real-time visualization of data collected by satellites, and by billions of sensors, RFID tags, and GPS-enabled cameras and smartphones around the world, is enabling humanity to sense, measure, understand and affect aspects of our existence in ways our ancestors could never have imagined in their wildest dreams.  The multifaceted project kicks off on September 25 with an eight-day “Measure Our World” event inviting people around the world to share and compare their lives in real time through an innovative smartphone app. The project also includes “Mission Control” events in New York, Singapore and London; “Data Detectives,” a global student initiative being conducted in conjunction with the TED organization; a stunning large-...
